When Count Alessandro Volta, with the help of anatomist Luigi Galvani and his frog leg experiment, invented the first battery — the so-called Voltaic pile — in 1800, he could only have dreamed of the future possibilities and significance of his invention. The combination of iron, copper, and the salty moisture on the frog’s leg triggered a chemical reaction that set electricity flowing, even if the capacity at the time was extremely limited. Volta eventually had the honor of presenting his invention to Napoleon Bonaparte, who awarded him, and his name lives on to this day: since 1897, the unit of electric potential has been called the “volt.”
